There are in total about 800 foundries of all kinds in Taiwan,
of which about 20% or 160 are involved in gravity or pressure
die castings. Die castings have been produced in Taiwan for
about 50 years, and currently the automotive, motorcycle and
electronics companies are most important. In the auto industry,
however, there is a trend for die casting companies to move
production to other countries, to be closer to growth markets
for motor vehicles.
Similarly, the local motorcycle industry is saturated and
the major motorcycle makers are beginning to manufacture more
of their products in Mainland China, southeast Asia, and elsewhere
overseas. The die casting industry of Taiwan is expected to
become more export-focused in the future. and the overall
outlook is for only modest growth. The exception to this is
the area of computer and telecommunications products, especially
in magnesium, where new companies are being established.
The China
Precision Diecasting company operates two plants in
the Taipei area, and there is a joint venture involving the
Jincheng Motorcycle Group in Nanjing, China.
