Heavy industry is important to the economic health of the
country. This includes production of steel, automobiles, and
die castings. In 2000, shipments reached 125,000 tons, of
which about 40% went to automobile makers and 35% to manufacturers
of motorcycles. Korea exports a sizeable volume of die castings
to Japan.
There are about 75 die casting plants in Korea, of which
only a few operate more than 10 machines. The city of Inchon
is a focal point of the industry.
