Economic reforms since 1991 have led to a resurgence in economic
growth and (until recently) increasing foreign and domestic
investment. Long term prospects are considered good.
The Indian die casting industry started in the late 1950s
and is dependent on the automotive industry and its growth,
with 60% of production going to this sector. Other markets
include electrical equipment, appliances, and business machines.
Aluminum castings accounted for nearly 95% of the total 80,000
tons in 2000.
There are about 200 die casting companies in India, operating
approximately 1,000 machines. Of the total companies, only
about 5% have 15 machines or more. Emmes Metals Pvt. Ltd.,
Mumbai operates three die castings plants producing aluminum
and zinc, two of which are located in Mumbai and one in Pune.
