The main national market for die casting in China is the
auto industry. Changchun, a district in the northeastern part
of the country, has historically been an important supplier
of auto parts. Shanghai is another important center.
The growth of die casting in China has been particularly
significant in Guangdong Province, adjacent to Hong Kong.
Hong Kong became a part of China in 1997, and, in fact, a
move by labor-intensive manufacturing from Hong Kong into
lower-cost areas in the interior of China was already well
under way before then. Thus, by mid-2000 it was reported that
more than 38 percent of Hong Kong companies had production
facilities elsewhere in China.
Within China as a whole, the die casting industry has undergone
significant expansion. A document from the China Foundry Association
in 1996 reported that there were 1,575 die casting foundries
in the People's Republic as of 1995, containing 5,893 die
casting machines. (See A
Survey of the Chinese Die Casting Industry.)
