The history of Russia since the end of the Soviet Union in
1991 has been one of economic decline. Power has shifted from
Moscow to the regions and the governors of the republics are
becoming more autonomous.
Foreign investment, following an initial surge in the early
1990s, has all but come to a halt. What economic growth exists
appears to be in a small minority of industrial companies
able to successfully export to the West.
Data on the current state of the diecasting industry are
difficult to come by. However, it has been reported that equipment
from shut down plants in Russia has been sold and removed
to Western countries. However, the Nonferrous Foundry Division
of KAMA
foundry, a huge complex in Tatarstan put up in the
early 1970s, remains in operation and is active in the export
market.
