Following some hard years after the end of the Cold War,
Poland has emerged as the economic leader of Eastern Europe,
particularly in terms of attracting foreign investors. Despite
close to 75% of the work force still being employed in agriculture,
Poland has a history of heavy industry -- one need only recall
the now-closed Gdansk shipyard, birthplace of the Solidarity
movement. This is also reflected in the growth of nonferrous
casting in the country, from 66,500 tons in 1997 to 84,000
t in 1999.
There are about 60 diecasting plants in the country. None,
however, are very large scale, except, perhaps, for the Teksid
operation in Bielsko-Biala.
