What the United States is to North America, Brazil is to
South America -- the economic engine upon which regional health
depends. The population of the country approaches 168 million,
making Brazil the second largest country in the Americas.
Brazil's motor vehicle production, 1.3 million units in 1999,
is the largest in Latin America. Not surprisingly, the country's
die casting industry is also fairly large, with at least 60
plants.
Although there is no major Brazil-based die casting group,
several international companies are represented. These include
General Motors (U.S.), Teksid
(Italy), Gibbs
Die Casting (U.S.) and Amcan
International (Canada). Increased interest in die casting
in Brazil reflects bright prospects for the motor vehicles
industries, the size of the domestic market for products using
die casting, and a reduction in trade barriers. These favorable
trends are expected to continue.
