What's
included in the Fittings & Municipal segment?
This segment includes castings used
in plumbing, and structural castings, such as manhole covers
and grates, that are bought by municipalities. Fittings and
municipal is unique because it is the major area of castings
that involves many standardized parts used by many customers,
rather than involving custom parts for every different customer.
Because castings in this segment are standardized, they are
subject to intense global competition. An estimated 25% of the
U.S. market is supplied by imports, with China, India, and Canada
being the leading supplier countries.
How does this compare with the other three categories into which
we divide the market for cast metal parts? |
How big
is the market for castings for fittings & municipal applications?
Fittings and municipal castings consume roughly 19% of all
castings (by weight). |
|
What metals are used
in castings for fittings & municipal applications?
Iron is the principal metal used
for fittings & municipal castings. Grey iron is used for municipal
castings. Fittings are more often made from ductile iron,
which withstands higher pressures. Some fittings are made
from non-ferrous metal, i.e. copper and copper-based metals.

What processes are
used in castings for fittings & municipal applications?
All processes are used, but sand
casting predominates. Some fittings are diecast.
